The Purpliai windmill, built in 1898 by Antanas Racevičius based on blueprints obtained from Latvia, is a valuable cultural heritage site located in the Mažeikiai district. Operating until 1962, the windmill was restored and today reflects ancient milling technologies and architectural traditions. Included in the Lithuanian Cultural Heritage Register, the windmill offers visitors a chance to explore history and traditions, as well as learn about the use of wind energy in agricultural activities.
Viekšniai Water Mill – a historic site in the Mažeikiai district, built in 1897 by Pranciškus Lengvenis. In 1909, part of the mill was purchased by J. Lesemas, and in 1918, the entire mill came under his ownership. In 1920, rollers were installed, and in 1925, a wool carding and spinning mill was added. In 1928, a generator was installed to supply electricity to the town. In 1999, the mill was privatized, and a hydroelectric plant was built. Today, it is a popular recreation spot where visitors can enjoy the natural scenery and learn about the mill's history.
Krucių Mill – a historic water mill built from field stones with a single pair of millstones, operating until 1979. In 1925, it was purchased by Rafaelis Lačas, who renovated it and lived nearby. During World War II, the mill was used to hold Jews. After the war, the mill was restored and operated until 1979 when it was closed. Later, it was converted into a recreational facility with a restaurant, but in 2023, the mill was demolished.
Stulpino Mill is a unique historical site located on the banks of the Ventos River, just seven kilometers from Mažeikiai. Built in 1886, the mill has preserved its original charm and interior. While it no longer operates as a restaurant, it continues to attract tourists interested in its impressive architecture and history. It is a great place to immerse yourself in the past of the Mažeikiai region and enjoy the beautiful natural surroundings. The mill remains an important historical landmark, reflecting the industrial heritage of the area.
Pauliankos Mill and Tavern is a historic mill where today visitors can enjoy not only the beauty of the Ventos River but also authentic food. The first mill was built in the mid-19th century, and its history dates back to the 1900s, when it was owned by various owners, including the Lačai family. After many transformations and reconstructions, the mill became a cultural center, and later, the mill buildings, owned by industry, were repurposed for various uses, including a library and cultural house. After the war, the mill was renovated and became an important economic hub for the village, but after the 1970s, it ceased operation and eventually transformed into a tavern. Pauliankos Tavern is a peaceful space surrounded by nature and greeted by the roar of the Ventos River, offering a relaxing atmosphere and delicious food. Located in the old mill building, it features an authentic grill terrace, well-maintained surroundings, wooden outdoor furniture, and cozy spots in a carefully tended meadow, all with a wonderful view of the river.
Gudu Water Mill – a cultural heritage site located in Gudu village, Viekšniai municipality, Mažeikiai district. The mill holds technological, historical, and architectural significance. A rest area with a 7-space parking lot, benches, and an informational sign is located nearby. It’s a great spot to relax and learn about the mill’s history and enjoy the natural beauty.
