Sculpture to Antanas Vienažindys

On 31 July 1987, a sculpture dedicated to Antanas Vienažindys (Vienužis), the priest, the distributor of banned Lithuanian press, the first Lithuanian lyricist, and the pioneer of love motifs in Lithuanian poetry, was ceremonially unveiled in Mažeikiai Old Town Park. It was created to honour the 95th anniversary of the poet’s death. Since 1876 until his death, Antanas Vienažindys was a priest in Laižuva Town where he took care of the construction of a magnificent church.

Almost 3-meter-high grey polished granite sculpture depicts a young, pensive priest wearing a cassock. The author of the monument is sculptor Prof. Gediminas Jokūbonis (1927–2006), member of the Lithuanian Artists’ Association. The sculpture was carved by Mažeikiai stonemason Juozas Katilius.

On 30 September 1993, the monument was entered into the Register of Cultural Property of the Republic of Lithuania as a significant object of artistic and memorial value.
