Sculpture “Marker”
If you are walking in Mažeikiai Old Town towards the pedestrian crossing over the railway, you can see an unusual sculpture named “Marker” that was created in the spring of 2014. It consists of two parts: a large, rusty metal rim, like a hint of the past, and a solid 1.40 m long stone part, the notches in which remind us of modernity. The date is engraved on the back of the stone. The sculpture is placed on a specially formed hill between the renovated apartment buildings of Mindaugo Street. The sculpture blends perfectly with the environment. The residents even planted grass on the hill where “Marker” rests. The stone with a metal part is a gift to the people of Mažeikiai from benevolent sponsors “Pdstudija” and professional sculptor Paulius Daujotas.
The work is compact, easily transported, and can be moved to another location if necessary. Lying quietly not far from renovated buildings and doing nothing, “Marker” managed to ignite a debate in the community regarding its contradictory assessment. This is what the sculptor wanted – to provoke, to wake up from stagnation and indifference, to force to see, appreciate and understand completely new things. Paulius Daujotas, the author of the sculpture, said: “I don't decorate the city, I just introduce intrigue into every person’s brain. It is normal that every sculpture, every piece of work evokes certain associations and feelings.”
