Sculpture “Bird”

In the autumn of 1983, nearly meter-high decorative sculpture of a stream-line form made of polished grey granite was erected on a half-meter pedestal in the Old Town of Mažeikiai. From a distance, it resembles an egg. But when you come closer, you can notice a bird’s beak highlighted by pink granite. At the bottom of the front part, there are 3 fingers of two legs made of the red granite and connected by a floating film.

Sculptor Zigmondas Raicevičius (1951-2018), a participant of the republican symposium held in Seda, joked that while working he was deeply engrossed in the round stone, persistently chipping away a small piece with a chisel he hoped that a bird would fly out of the granite. After finishing, he did not detail the sculpture and named it very simply – “Bird”.
