Monument “To Liberty of Speech”
On the initiative of the employees of the regional newspaper “Santarvė”, the only monument dedicated to “To Liberty of Speech” in Lithuania was erected at the entrances of Mažeikiai Public Library name after Henrikas Nagys. In the city, this is the thirteenth work of the founder of “Pdstudija”, professional sculptor Paulius Daujotas, where stone and metal are harmoniously combined. The monument consists of four parts: a 75 cm high three-part granite pedestal and a 1.65 m high alphabet that rises evenly to the top. The employees of Mažeikiai construction company Kustata, UAB contributed to the appearance of this original monument: they pulled the necessary stone from the quarry. Elmaga, UAB provided the metal, and the workers cut letters of the same size. If you touch it with your hands, you can feel the outlines of letters and even put together a single word. The words of Romualdas Granauskas, an essayist, creator of Lithuanian rural prose, dramatist, are engraved on the front part of the stone pedestal: “The spirit of the nation lives in the language”. The monument was ceremonially unveiled on 15 February 2016, during the opening of the renovated Public Library.
