Memorial Stone to the Children’s Music School

In 1955, the Children’s Music School was established in a wooden house in Mažeikiai. A decade later, it was moved to its current premises. On 19 December 1980, in Mažeikiai Old Town, in the yard of Vytautas Klova Music School next to tall trees of the park, a monument dedicated to the 25th anniversary of the founding of the Children’s Music School was unveiled at the initiative of the school principal Ričardas Grušas. Almost 2-meter-high natural stone brought from Žemalė Village was used for the monument. It was mounted on a 15 cm high square concrete plinth. The boulder had a plaque with the inscription: “25 years of Mažeikiai Children’s Music School, 1980”. Above the plaque there were words of composer Algis Šimkus: “Music is alive / in the heart of a person”.

No one remembers when the cast-iron plaque with the inscription disappeared. The boulder was recalled in the spring of 2015. Then a new granite slab (25 x 35 cm) dedicated to the 60th anniversary of the founding of Vytautas Klova Music School was attached. The inscription on it was carved by Mažeikiai sculptor Zenonas Steponavičius (1958–2024). The words of local composer Vytautas Klova are used as a sentence: “The harmony of feelings and sounds, / dreams and deeds / determines / Human maturity".
