A. Vienažindis trail remembering history in Laižuva: from spending free time to getting to know history

In Mažeikiai district, in the town of Laižuva, the educational trail commemorates the life and work of Lithuanian poet and priest Antanas Vienažindis -Vienužis, who lived at the end of the 19th century.

Currently, the newly installed path can be used to travel about half a kilometer from the cemetery where A. Vienažindys is buried to the stone named after him, on which the poet spent a lot of time composing and singing his songs. It is planned that the installation of the second section of the trail will begin this year after receiving funding. In total, it is planned to install three sections of the A. Vienažindis trail, connecting the Vienažindis lip, the cemetery, the stone, the cemetery and the former church site. It is true that the Vienužis linden tree was broken by a strong wind during a storm last summer, but it is still part of the trail's attractions, as the surviving trunk is covered under a dome that protects the tree from precipitation.

According to Laižuva elder Jolanta Šeputienė, local residents and town guests willingly visit the Vienažindis trail. Allegedly, it has become the main object of a walk in the town: "In the summer, when the weather is right, quite a lot of people walk, ride bikes and pushchairs." This is influenced not only by the beautiful location, but also by the preserved part of the history of the 19th century, with which the preserved and restored objects help to get acquainted. Also, every year the Laižuva Eldership and the Laižuva Library of the Mažeikiai Henrikas Nagis Public Library organize educational programs, events and excursions. It also tells the story of Vienažindis so that it never sinks into oblivion.

Therefore, we invite all residents and guests of the area to visit the Antanas Vienažindis educational trail, where you can not only walk and have a good time, but also get to know the life story of A. Vienažindis, a poet and priest worthy of Lithuania, from up close.

Antanas Vienažindys was a Lithuanian poet, priest, bookseller, draftsman and builder, who helped the people of Laika to build the chapels of the Stations of the Cross, which, together with the fence of the former church cemetery, were entered into the register of cultural heritage objects of the Republic of Lithuania. With the care of the pastor and the parishioners, a brick church was built, which unfortunately was blown up by the retreating German army in 1944. He was also an acclaimed poet, famous for his poems reminiscent of folk songs. The most famous songs composed by him have become a legacy of the people, for example "Merry, merry, / While the young are eating - / There will be no time for us to have fun, / When we get old [...]" or the poem turned into a song: "Tell me, little girl, / Do you love me ? / How many times have I asked you, / And there you are still silent!..”
